As we already mentioned in previous articles, there are plenty of variants of poker out there. Today we’ll talk more about the Omaha hold’em game and some Omaha forums.

The Omaha hold’em game (commonly known as Omaha) is a community card poker game which has some similarities to the popular Texas hold’em. Even the Omaha game itself has multiple variations, such as the Omaha hi-low split-8 or better (Omaha/8), the Pot-limit Omaha (PLO), the Five-card Omaha (Big O) and the Six-card Omaha (6-O). The original game is the Omaha high.

The name is made of the 2 types of games that Omaha hold’em combines. First there is the “Omaha” which refers to the requirement of using exactly two hole cards, and then there is the “Hold’em” which refers to using community cards that are shared by all players. This is opposed to Draw games where each player makes a hand only with hole cards, and Stud games where each hand has both hidden hole cards and non-community cards that can be seen by everyone.

The first major difference between the Omaha and the Texas hold’em is that each player receives 4 cards instead of 2. The betting process and the total of 5 community cards are the same, and at the end each player has to make the best hand of 5 out of exactly 3 cards on the board and exactly 2 from his own cards. So unlike Texas hold’em, a player can’t use 4 or even 5 cards on the board.

This concept changes the probabilities of creating certain hands like a flush, a straight or a full house, and also increases the number of hands a certain player can create. Sometimes even the most experienced Omaha players take some more time in order to find out the best possible hand that they could make.

Just as with the other types of poker, there are plenty of Omaha forums out there. And also the major Texas hold’em forums have sections dedicated to Omaha. For example, the popular Two Plus Two forums have a full category dedicated to Omaha/8, another for High Stakes Pot-Limit Omaha and another one for Small Stakes Pot-Limit Omaha.

On these categories you will find plenty of threads and hundreds of useful posts on how to play the game, tips and strategies, websites to play on, websites to avoid, odds, variances and so much more.

On the FullContactPoker forum you will find a really long post from one of the members in which he describes his entire Omaha Strategy, with all the little details. Just reading that single post could definitely improve your Omaha games.
